Puppy Crate Training

Crate training a puppy is a fast, humane and quick way to housetrain your dog. Puppy crate training works on the principal that your puppy will not want to soil his resting place. Remember the goal of crate training to make your puppy want to eliminate his waste outdoors rather than in your home.

The most effective way to crate train your puppy is to ensure that you provide him with plenty of positive reinforcement. Never use the crate as a punishment, and remember to reward your puppy when he relieves himself outdoors.

A puppy should never be kept in the crate for longer that he can hold his bladder and bowels. For a young puppy, this means a maximum of 3 to 4 hours.

For the best results, ensure that you place the crate in an area of the house where the dog will not be alone. It is important for the puppy to feel happy and not lonely. You can place toys in the crate but should avoid leaving food or water, which will only encourage the puppy to eat and drink and relieve himself within the crate.

Be sure to take your puppy outdoors after meals, and praise him when he relieves himself. Avoid punishing your puppy if he does soil the crate. If you see your puppy exhibiting behaviour that suggests he needs to go outside, take him outdoors immediately, and be sure to praise him after he relieves himself.

Finally, remember that the crate should be neither too small nor too big for your puppy to comfortably fit it.  As you become more confident that your puppy will not soil the house, let him out of the crate more often and continue until you are satisfied that your puppy is fully housetrained.
